The History of Iran in 20th Century

The course deals with the history of the largest power in the Middle East - Iran - within the context of interaction between different social forces: the Shia clergy, secular landlords, entrepreneurs, new bourgeoisie and westernized intelligentsia. A special emphasis will be put on the process of transformation of an underdeveloped nation, which was strongly dependent on the European hegemons, into a major regional power. This process is viewed as an ultimate result of drastic shifts within the Iranian society, which was dominated by the corporation of the Shia clergy that acted as a key proponent of modernization ideology, adopted for Iran. A special emphasis is put upon the history of the 1979 Antimonarchy revolution and political struggle that followed.
