Introduction to Linguistics

The main goal of the course is to introduce the students to various linguistic disciplines and scientific schools, to show the range of data studied by them, major problems they aim to solve, their main goals. The course will discuss different levels of the language system (phonetics and phonology, grammar, semantics, pragmatics and discourse studies) and different approaches to the study of language (experimental, clinical, computational, corpus linguistics, formal and functional approaches, sociolinguistics, historical and comparative linguistics, linguistic typology). The students will get acquainted with the most recent studies and will have a brief introduction in the history of linguistics.
