Anatoli Tataurov, class of 2004

Labelmen – Creative Director

I graduated from Smolny in 2004. The college gave me friends, possibilities, and guidance in my surrounding social space. At Smolny, you are treated as a person—not a faceless participant in the educational process.

To this very day I’m still on friendly terms with several professors and administrators. A lot can be said about how Smolny manages to combine the best elements of two educational systems: the amount of choice offered in the west and the traditional seriousness of the Russian approach to classical education. But, from my point of view, the real value of this college lies in Smolny’s understanding that a school should work for its students, not an inspection committee. Nevertheless, Smolny actually does offer such a large choice of subjects that I doubt many other Russian institutions could boast of a similar selection.
