Why is the College called “Smolny?”

Initially, Smolny College was located on the premises of SPbSU in the historic complex of the former Smolny Monastery, built during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was for this reason that the joint academic project of SPbSU and Bard College (USA) was named Smolny. In 2001 the Federal Commission for the Management of Government Property gave Bobrinsky Palace to SPbSU. Although Smolny is now located in the palace, the college’s original name has been preserved.
