Analytical Reading and Writing
The course is intended for students at an intermediate and advanced level of Russian language proficiency. The aim of the course is to develop students' skills and abilities that are necessary to read and critically understand academic literature, as well as write works on topics within the scope of their own academic interests. Thus, the course is designed to help students integrate into the university environment and successfully cope with academic discipline courses taught in Russian. The course program is focused on an individual approach to each student. Scientific articles on topics of interest to students, texts of Russian literature, and journalistic texts are used as materials in the course. In the classroom, students will learn to distinguish between different types of speech (journalistic, academic, colloquial, and artistic), become acquainted with their specifics, and develop the ability to use stylistically marked vocabulary. Throughout the class, various interactive methods and techniques of liberal education are utilized, aimed at developing critical thinking skills (critical analysis of texts, implying the active expression of students' attitude towards what they read, creative writing, and work in small groups). Students will be able to expand their vocabulary necessary to read and write texts in the academic style and get acquainted with basic grammatical features of texts in the academic style, learn how to write an essay, an abstract, and a review in Russian.
