Human Cognition, Language, and Evolution
This course considers modern evolutionary theory as an explanation for the emergence of human cognitive and linguistic capacities. It explores the application of evolutionary theory to psychology, and explanations for the origins of human cognitive and linguistic abilities based on evolution. In the course we will discuss possible trajectories for the development of human cognition and language as they are understood by modern science. Among other things, we will evaluate research hypotheses generated by approaches applying evolution to psychology, recent findings, and implications for the theory of human cognition. We will also discuss common misconceptions regarding evolution and human cognition that are widespread in popular media and the public.
