Politics of Memory and Historical Politics
The study of the use of the past by contemporary societies is the main focus of the course. It includes the political use of history, societies' dealing with the traumatic past, and a business-like approach to history as a resource. Students will learn the concepts of "historical memory," "historical politics," "trauma;" the main ways of representation and affirmation of the national narratives of the past, including historical toponymy, memorials, museums and history textbooks. Special attention is paid to Russia's difficult approach to its past. The course will cover major conflicts with historical memory on the international level and inside Russian society.
